Newsflash: If I buy a second house that I will not live in, can I rent out rooms individually?

For example, if the house has 4 bedrooms, can I rent each room out to 4 different people for $X/mo./room? Legally speaking of course. And if it’s not legal to do so, is it still commonly done among landlords?I know of a few people who rent out their homes this way – room by room, individually. But I don’t think it’s legal for them to do so.Edit: U.S., East Coast. I’m new at this stuff so I’m just trying to learn as much as I can right now.
