Newsflash: Why are houses in West Virginia so insanely cheap?

So, out of curiosity, I started browsing Zillow to check out house prices in different US states, and I was stunned by how cheap houses are in West Virginia. There’s big houses that are cheaper than houses of similar size in my country, which is currently at war (Ukraine). So, it was shocking to find out that there’s an American state with houses that are cheaper than houses of similar size in my war-torn Eastern European country. What’s the reason behind such cheap prices?
