I have a family member who purchased a three family home in NYC about 30 years ago. For 30 years the city had been charging property tax for what the NYC Finance Dept said was a three family home. They recently had been looking to sell but found out from the NYC Building Dept that the house is classified as a two family. According to the city they can only receive 6-8 years worth of overcharged property tax back. That seems kind of wrong when the city was overcharging taxes for over 30 years. Anyone have any experience with this or advice? Thanks.
