My partner and I are preparing to make an offer on a single family home in Maryland. The home has been on the market for some time and I think part of the reason being the property taxes are around 40% higher than anything else we’ve seen in this price range. The assessed value is higher than any other house on the street and much more than we’re planning to offer, so naturally we are curious about the appeal process.The state’s department of assessments and taxation site says you can appeal tax value within 60 days or purchasing a home but the ownership has to transfer before July 1, which obviously wouldn’t happen here. Does that mean we have to wait until the next year or the next assessment before we can appeal? Maryland only reassesses tax values every three years so we don’t want to get stuck overpaying taxes just because we didn’t buy a few months ago.
