Newsflash: Is it better to sell your home first or make offers on contingency? (San Diego)

I am looking into moving houses and I’m wondering if there is a big difference between selling my current home, and then renting while looking for a new home versus making offers on contingency of selling my current home.It would obviously be a lot more hassle to sell and then rent (moving twice, likely signing a one year lease, etc) but would it be worth it?Also, can anyone speak to the tax implications of the two approaches? Especially if I’m selling in one tax year and buying in another?
