Newsflash: Purchase after Deed In Lieu in NJ

My husband and I are trying to purchase a bank owned property in NJ. We are currently under contract for this property. However, we signed a Deed in Lieu of foreclosure on June 6, 2013. We were told we had to wait 4 years to qualify for a conventional mortgage again. Is it 4 years from the signing/notarized date OR 4 years from the date the deed was re-recorded with the county?? Our mortgage company told us it was the signing date, but the underwriter said no, that it the recorded date. Please help.
